What's In The Box Tips and Recipes Drop-off Points Calendar

What a rough ride this year has been for gardening! The heavy frost we experienced last Saturday was the "final straw" that sealed the fate of our gardens. Not much has survived all of this and as a result there just isn't much to pack from now on. To recap this year:

• An unusually cold spring and mid April snow storm pushed back the planting schedule to get us off to a late start. Our late April plans had to be adjusted with the hopes of extending the season later into fall "baring an early fall frost".
• June and early July looked good and gave us some boxes that went well over their 1/2 bushel capacity.
• By mid July, we were irrigating every day due to the dry conditions. We lost some of our vine goods as we just couldn't get enough water to them. Other items were set back as no irrigation can replace a good soaking rain.
• August gave us somewhere around 24 inches of rain in less than 3 weeks breaking all records for this area. The weeds literally took over in a very short period of time as the rains came at a critical weeding time. The ground was so saturated that we couldn't till it to get our fall planting in resulting in a limited menu of items for the boxes.
• September helped dry things out but the bulk of the damage was already done. As mentioned above, the final blow was the frost of last week. We tarped what we could but there wasn't enough tarp to go around.

Fall is the time we had expected to share an abundant harvest with you. Our plans were to divide much of the surplus to members so they could freeze or can it. Unfortunately, this will not be happening this year. Additionally, we have found ourselves in the position of not being able to fill the last share boxes well. We are at week 16 of our year leaving us 8 boxes left to fill for full share members. At best, we expect to fill two of those. This will leave us 6 boxes short for the season. We have been and will continue to include eggs with the boxes as available but this isn't much consolation.

When we asked you to partner with us in these gardens, it was our intent to deliver a great value for your dollars. This year has not allowed us to do that. We are hoping that you are willing to share the risk of agriculture and gardening with us much as if you had planted your own garden. We also hope that next year will bring a better season with improved methods and better weather. Please consider accepting our best efforts as "good enough" for this most unusual year.
