Farm Fresh Produce - Naturally Grown - Stewardship of the Land
E-Newsletter April 10, 2009
Reprint of mailed version.
Annie's Acres is now beginning it's third year! We're looking forward to getting
our gardens tilled and the planting done and it looks like the weather will
finally cooperate. Our planting schedule this year will hopefully be a little
more towards the "normal" side with the last two years being more
than just a little challenge. We'll be planting a similar variety of items but
with more focus on vine goods this year. We'd like to go into fall able to offer
pumpkins and squash in plentiful quantities. We are also continuing the planting
of more apple trees with the Wolf river trees having gone in last spring. This
year we'll be adding Honey Crisp as well as four additional varieties. It will
still be awhile before these trees start to bear fruit but the orchard has been
started with the future in mind. Other things going in this year will include
horse radish, berries, and grapes.
We've also teamed up with Nature's Bakery in Madison in order to add a new dimension
of offerings though an expanded "Annie's General Store". Products
available from Nature's include: 1.) An assortment of breads including unleavened
sourdough, pita, and essene. 2.) eight varieties of granola. 3.) Trail mix.
4.) Four varieties of cookies. 5.) Three varieties of veggie burgers. 6.) And
Spinach Cheese Calzones. We encourage you to visit Nature's Bakery's web site
at www.naturesbakery.coop to learn more about their products. We'll tell you
more about how to order and how these products are delivered in the next Annie's
newsletter.
Annie's General store will be expanded to carry some of the essentials for sustainable
cooking. For instance, we will offer wheat berries from Natural Way Mills, a
certified organic grower in East Grand Forks, MN. These will be made available
in small quantities so you can grind your own, fresh flour or sprout the berries
for salads or cooking. Annie's General Store will also be adding a few simple
appliances such as a hand operated mill such as the one pictured below (picture
on mailed version only). There is nothing better than home made bread baked
with fresh ground flower! Our goal is for Annie's General Store to offer some
of the basics for the kitchen conveniently and at a good price. Again, there
will be more information in the upcoming Newsletter.
Otherwise, much will remain the same with Annie's acres. We'll continue to focus on providing great, safe food for a right price. We want to provide "real food for real people". To us, that phrase means you shouldn't have to pay more to have food grown right! We'll also continue to do the right thing for the soil using sustainable practices, without using harmful pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers.
So once again, we invite you to become a part of what we are doing. Annie's
Acres is much more than a business to us. Your teaming up with us allows us
to do something right for the environment with an approach that works with the
creation around us and does not force it. You can also feel good about keeping
your dollars local and not promoting destructive agricultural practices. The
money you spend on membership with Annie's Acres stays in the community in a
very efficient manner. Now more than ever, that is important. For more information
on the practices we use, visit us at www.1887brand.com and follow the links
to Annie's Acres.
To become a member, you can fill out the enclosed membership application form
that is part of our brochure and return it in the enclosed return envelope.
Please note the flexible payment option that include NO PRICE INCREASES AGAIN
FOR THIS YEAR! The cost of being a member of Annie's Acres is comparable to
supermarket prices and is almost half the cost of other CSA's in the area. We've
also enclosed an extra brochure in case you run across someone who would like
to join. We also want to remind you to have your first payment in by May 1,
2009. That will help us get off to a rolling start with the spring costs we
incur.
Again, We thank you and look forward to being . . .
Your Gardeners,
Mark and Annie Ranum
