1887 Brand Apiaries
The Tradition Continues . . .
Our family's involvement in beekeeping began in 1887 when Gilbert M. Ranum acquired his first hive. The bees were taken in trade by his brother for a sewing machine and given to Gilbert when he was 15 years old. From this hive, Gilbert grew the business to 200 colonies. His two sons, Edward and Alvin, grew the family business to several hundred colonies by the early sixties. Edward's son, John then entered the picture in the mid-sixties. Together, father and son brought the business to a peak of about 1500 colonies by around 1970. The tradition continues today with Edward's youngest son, Mark, his wife Annie, and family. Our product today bears the mark "1887" to commemorate the high standard of quality that has been a family hallmark for over 120 years.
